Chalk Chase

posted by Web Master   [ updated ]

Monday saw the cubs chasing chalk marks around the Parliamentary triangle. With three new chums in hand we broke into two groups and set off to find the chalk marks that pointed to where we must go next. Strangely the group that went second ended up in front of the other group. So the first group stopped between old and new parliament houses for a short game to allow for more separation.

Playing a game.

We are lucky to live in Canberra that has so many interesting places to spend the evening. The Parliamentary Triangle is just one of many public spaces that we can utilise.

All seemed to have fun even parents enjoyed the walk. Next week we plan to do experiments with Hot Air and lifting. We can compare with our recent experiments with Helium. We always welcome new potential cubs so if your between age of 8 and 11 and want to have fun with our group come along.

UP - Fun with helium balloons

posted 8 Feb 2012 17:22 by Web Master   [ updated 8 Feb 2012 17:37 ]

The cubs spent the first night back experimenting with Helium Balloons. We started the night trying to work out how much 1 balloon would lift and guessing the number of balloons needed to lift 100g bottle.

At this point we had a visit from a flying shark... the world just got a little more dangerous!

We found 10-12 balloons were needed as they were different sizes. Each six was able to make their bottle fly.

Now we needed to lift a cub before we moved onto lifting the hall to South America (Which is east or west).

Julia was chosen as smallest cub and we worked out we need about 2000 balloons we only had a 100 so we tried anyway. Sadly Julia didn't move but when she got out the basket flew to the ceiling and hence we had Air Scout One our first sustainable flying machine

Sadly the Scout all still stands in Latrobe Park and not at Paradise Falls Sth America. But we may have made it easier to take washing out to the line.

Cubs Visit Temora Warbird Airshow

posted 22 Nov 2011 14:20 by Web Master

The day started early with all meeting at the Airport and half the cubs flying to Temora with Jabiru in his Aircraft. The rest had a 3hour drive ahead of us. Both the flight and the drive were uneventful although Jabiru enjoyed the extra traffic and landing in front of a crowd on his arrival at Temora.

The static and flying displays during the day were excellent. With highlight seeing Connie flying it is a big lumbering 4 engine passenger liner that was very graceful although somewhat Smokey on start up. Was fun to watch them push it back down the runway and then start it near the fire engines. It was hard to tell if it was starting or burning.

The day was hot, dusty and windy but little complaint from the cubs. We sat near the classic cars and the leaders drooled over the aircraft and the cars.

The highlight of the day was to see the P40 Kitty Hawk, P51 Mustang, F86 Sabre, Meteor and FA-18 flying together in a tribute the 75 Sqn RAAF and then the FA-18 peel off and give a special show. It is amazing how such a powerful plane can just seem to stop in the air.

Tired and hot the cubs swapped places and drove and flew back to Canberra.

Air Scouts win the Annual Scout Raft Regatta

posted 13 Nov 2011 18:20 by Web Master

What a fantastic day to be on the water!

150 Scouts lined up for the Annual Scout Raft Regatta on the foreshore at LBG Scout Hall. 26 Patrols participated. There were some very successful rafts and some that didn’t quite work. However it was a learning experience and a number of scouts were seen to check out those craft among the top finishers obviously with an eye to next year’s production for the regatta.

The winning entry for 2011 was one of the teams from Air Scouts. To check out all the “ top ten” results and the winning team go to www.actscouts.com and have a look at the Raft Regatta tab.

Congratulations to all of those Scouts who participated today and really enjoyed themselves also to the winners and those in the top ten.

Thanks also to the leaders and parents  who assisted with the safety boats, the lunch, the transport and contributed to another successful Raft Regatta

Cubs Build a Bridge and get over it!

posted 31 Oct 2011 15:40 by Web Master   [ updated 31 Oct 2011 15:44 ]

Seth Takes first steps onto bridge.

Monday saw the Air Scout Canberra Cub section build a rope bridge utilising some of the knotts they have been learning over the last few terms. Building two A frames using square lashings and then using these to support their rope bridge.

Stephanie Making sure knott is tight it needs to support us all.

Each cub walked across the bridge it was scary for some but they all did it. Sadly we ran out of time for parents and leaders to have a go.

Maree and Catharina tye on the guy ropes.

The cubs are now exctited with their new skills and are planning to build many devices with square lashings.

Assistant Scout Leader

This term look forward to welcome Mitchell Kelly as a trainee scout leader. Mitchell has a life-long affiliation with scouts. He started as a Joey and linked through all the sections up to venturers. After a gap year in Europe, Mitch will start university next year.

Welcome MTB, we are happy to have you with us!

Jamborette

A SUCCESSFUL EVENT

Tired but very happy. That is how best to describe the scouts after last term’s Jamborette.

All but two scouts attended. Troop Council therefore kept the patrols in tact, rather than mixing and matching scouts across patrols. This is just how it should be. Teamwork, discipline and order was the result!

The troop earned a camp standards award for their effort around the campsite. Furthermore, with all the rain we received, the scouts learnt how to stop water running through the traditional troop tents—dig trenches!

We also continued our tradition of “sundowners” and entertained the scouts’ guests and the camp brass at a “grape juice and cheese” and “caviar hors d’oeuvres” on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Cubs Sleepover

posted 19 Jun 2011 20:09 by Web Master   [ updated 19 Jun 2011 20:57 ]

The cubs had a noisy sleepover in the hall on Saturday Night.
We started with a small fire and some songs, jokes and skits. The jokes got worse the singing got worse but the skits were fun.

The venturers visited and showed us their fire twirling skills. The cubs loved it especially the fire breathing they said was like watching a real live dragon. Thanks to the three venturers who came to show us.

Then we had Pizza a good healthy dinner and a few games and then time to sleep. Pizza eaten quickly and games played with vigor and sleep was a failure.

In the morning the birds were stomping and tweeting at 5:30 only to be grumbled at by an angry Wombat.

Thanks to Catharina  for the pictures.
