On 11th April 2010 one of our former Scouts, Savannah McGuirk, was presented with the Queen's Scout Award.
Savannah earned her Australian Scout Medallion with Air Scouts Canberra in 2007. As a Venturer, she joined the Yass Combined Unit and over the last three years has steadily progressed through the Venturer award scheme, culminating with the Queen's Scout Award.
Savannah's achievement is testament to her passion for Scouting and outdoors and her determination and grit to complete whatever she sets out to do, to the very best of her ability. Well deserved congratulations!

Air Scouts Canberra was represented by Group Leader John Evans and Scout Leader Keith Jobson at the presentation, which was held at Riverbank Park, Yass on a very cool and windy day!

We had fun working with hovercraft at Cubs and Joey Scouts this week. Each cub was able to build a simple hovercraft from a CD a "popper" bottle top and a balloon.  The fun didn't stop there we were able to make a cub size hovercraft that could hold the weight of all but two of our cubs. Each cub and Joey Scout was able to go for a ride on a cushion of air. They saw how a hovercraft slew as it went around a corner and how smooth the ride was.       |
The Cubs and Joey Scouts got together for a family BBQ and rocket launch evening. The night started very windy so the rocket launch was postponed until the wind had died down. We all enjoyed playing a few games and cooking some snags.  But around 7pm the wind died down and we were able to launch the rockets. Seth was first to go and the rocket zoomed to the sky then the ribbon deployed and detached from the rocket. Shame Seth's father can't tie good knots. The rocket was found eventually by Ka in the middle of neighbouring football field.  Others launched there rockets and some were never seen again falling to earth somewhere in the park area but never spotted where. Others where eagerly recovered by the cubs racing after them. The evening finished around 8pm with all seeming to have had fun. (See MP4 Video)  As this was the last event for the year I would like to take an opportunity to thank all parents and leaders who help make the running of the Cubs and Joey Scouts so much fun. The evening and camps would not work if it was not for the help of all of you and you should be proud of the wonderful kids you all have. |

Once again the Branch meet for the Annual Kub Kar race. Cubs from all over Canberra and the region came to race their cars against each other.  Air Scouts competed and once again all cubs had great fun. Many getting lots of first places and having fun.  Siobhan made it too the finals and Aaron won a prize for best design. |
We all left bright and early Sunday morning to spend the day at Mt Selwyn. Come cubs had never been to the snow so was their first taste of being really cold.  Toboggan were very popular with the Air Scout Canberra typical attempt to make anything fly. Cubs launched themselves into the air over any bump they could find.  Snow angels and balls were being made everywhere and Wombat had to be on constant guard against being a target.  |
The cubs meet to ride around the lake and do a few activities. We started at Questacon and went to the sculpture Gardens here we did some estimation of height of Sculptures. And had a look around.  Then we crossed the lake on Kings Bridge and visited the forest near the police memorial.  We made bark "Lean-tos" to shelter from any rain coming. Cubs broke into twos and built their own shelters.  Then we went on to a park to have afternoon tea and concluded our ride back at Questacon. |
The Annual ANZAC Sleepover and dawn service was held again although the term sleepover should be changed to wakeover. Airscouts had 6 cubs and 1 joey attend. After arriving and playing a few games and walking around the war memorial the youth members were sent to bed... to sleep... many hours latter muffled voices could be heard communicating to each other. I do remember waking around 3am and still hearing a few muffled voices.  The Hall with sleeping bags set up ready to go for the "Sleep" over.  Nick ready for "Sleep". According to Jack and Nick they did not sleep... I can remember hearing their voices late into the night. We were all rudely awaken by the venturers at 4:10am and made our way to the dawn service. The weather was not great but the rain held of to the end of the service. Breakfast was had and a quick visit to the unknown soldier and then was time to go home where parents will have the joy of tired cubs and Joey for the day. The entire Group of Air Scouts Canberra traveled to Cobbity and Camden to have a weekend of Air Activities. This involved Venturer, Scouts, Cubs and Joey visiting the Scout Air Activities Center at Camden Airport to earn various badges and to enjoy a flight.  Cubs go for a walk around Cobbity Cricket Ground For most of us we left Saturday afternoon and headed up to Cobbity where we stayed at the Cobbity Scout hall. This hall is set next to the Cobbity Cricket Ground and had plenty of area for the youth members to run around. The weather was alittle unpredicatable but as you can always predict it started to pour with rain as the Scout put up their tents. They got them up and were ready for dinner although a little wet.  We had a camp fire and a few skits by the Cubs and Scouts The Cubs slept in the hall and was very pleasant to hear rain hitting tin roof at 3 am... although would have been nicer not to hear it and sleep through it.  One of the Cessna 172's the Air Activities Group used for the flights. Breakfast was bright and early as we left for Camden Airport early ready for a day of learning and flying. The Scouts were first to fly with each group having a half hour flight. The Cubs and Joeys learned about the parts of an aircraft and throry of flight and also shown how to wear the headsets. Then went for a walk around the airport to see all the different parts that make up an airport.  The Cubs and Joeys Walked around the Airport we even walked right next to Taxi Way. Then the cubs and Joeys went flying while the Scouts did their theory.  A view from the Aircraft A great weekend was had by all and I believe everyone earned their badges. All the cubs got their level 2 Flight badge. Thanks to the leaders at the Scout Air Activity center and we hope to see you again soon. |
The Cubs visited the Canberra Airport Fire Station on Monday the 23 Feb 2009. We were first given a OHS briefing that included what to do if an emergency was to happen while we were there. The Alarm went off and the doors opened to reveal 3 large Airport Fire Trucks. It was like a scene from Thunderbirds.  The cubs then visited the comms room and had a great view of the Airport. We learned how all the alarms came to this room and that they have a call out around once a day mainly for first aid.   |
Seth recently visited a Japanese Cub Pack in Chofu in Tokyo. He went with his older brother Yuri(a scout from LBG) and his younger brother Roy (soon to be a Joey at Air Scouts).  On parade with the Cubs Seth cooked sweet potato on a open camp fire.  They played ball games and had lots of fun.   |
Monday the 15th of December saw the group form for our end of year Christmas Party. A fantastic time was had by all present. We started the night with an opening parade where we invested a cub and then we went on to crafts and games.  The scouts set up a low rope course which all enjoyed.  The Joeys presented the Salvation Army with a Food Parcel they had been collecting over the term.  And the cubs made a mess with a big "Pie Fight" chasing their favourite Scout.  Santa even came with Ice Creams for all.  Many thanks to all those that helped and we look forward to fun next year. All section will be starting again in the first week of Term 1 2009. |
