Attending the ACT Branch camp over the Canberra Day long weekend were members of the newly formed Air Scouts Canberra Thunderbirds Patrol: Josie Bennetts, Alexander
Jobson, Robbie Dixon, Mirani Parker and Logan Davis. On the
Saturday, they set up camp in the
late morning and attended the noon opening ceremony of the new Eco Village (also
known as the Shakespeare Centre for Scouting in recognition of the donation that
lead to its construction after the 2003 Bushfires had destroyed the previous
facility closer to the Murrumbidgee / Cotter River confluence).
After a quick
lunch they were off to Casuarina
Sands for the Scout Raft Regatta. It was a hotly contested event and
due to the multi-aspect scoring system, a decision was not immediately
announced. Judging criteria included assessment of: raft design,
construction, teamwork both on and off the water, and the all important raft
performance aspect. Many lessons were learned, especially the importance
of prior planning, rehearsal and dealing with adversity and setbacks. The
Air Scouts Canberra team was announced
as winners at the closing parade
on Sunday afternoon and were presented with "George" the
perpetual ACT Scouts Raft Regatta Trophy by Scouts Commissioner, Rob Fredericksen.
